  1. Keep Kitchen and Bathroom Clean.

    Clean Kitchen

The best way to control cockroaches is to keep the home clean and free of food particles.   Especially the kitchen and bathrooms.  Vacuum very well, and thoroughly wash the area with strong soapy water.  Remove the vacuum bag and seal it in a bag before throwing it away.

  2. Diatomaceous Earth Dust/Powder.

    Diatomaceous Earth Powder

    1. What Is Diatomaceous Earth, and What It Does.

This is a safe natural way to kill cockroaches and prevent their spread.  It is safe to people and pets.  You can spread this around the house where you have seen cockroaches or around the circumference of the home or at doorways.  It is great to be spread on top of cabinets and behind appliances.  Cockroaches and other small exoskeleton insects die within 48 hours.  People often have this at home and you should ask if there is some available.  It is easily available online or locally in most USA cities.  Know that Diatomaceous Earth will harm other exoskeleton insects like ants too, and I'd suggest selective use of this product within the household, and garage, but with limited or no use outside of the house or in the yard if you want to retain your beneficial ants.

It is a natural fossilized remains of diatoms (a type of hard-shelled algae). Diatom particles are very small and sharp and only harmful to the small insect exoskeletons.  The Diatomaceous Earth light dust easily clings to the bodies of insects as they crawl over it.  The tiny diatom particles cut into the waxy coating of insects and as a result the insects dry out and die of dehydration.  Since the effects of Diatomaceous Earth is mechanical and not chemical, insects cannot become immune to its action.

      1. Small amounts (in small porous bags) of catnip can be left in areas of cockroach activity or suspected cockroach presence.
      2. Catnip can be cooked gently (simmered) in a small amount of water to make a catnip fluid.  The catnip fluid can be sprayed on cabinets of a kitchen, behind counters, on door ways, etc.

Spraying cockroaches directly with strong soap water will kill them.  If you are surprised by this, then ya, just soapy water.

  5. Bear and Bread in a Can.

Cockroaches will get in, but won't get out.  They will strongly be drawn to the sent of the beer.

    1. Use a large coffee can.
    2. Soak a piece of bread completely with beer.
    3. Put the beer soaked bread in the can.
    4. Put the can where you have sen lots of cockroaches huddle.

  6. Boric Acid on Top Of Kitchen Cabinets.

    Boric Acid

    1. Usage and Warning.

Cockroaches like high places and use them as an elevated freeway void of humans and predators.  Put boric acid (a powder) at top of kitchen cabinets and the cockroaches will take the boric acid back to their nests which will kill them all.  WARNING, boric acid is toxic to internal flesh; such as to the mouth.  Keep out of the reach of children.

  7. Bay Leaves.

Acts as a deterrent or repellent.  These can be placed in cabinets and storage areas to help repel cockroaches.  Bay leaves are aromatic leaves of several plants (can be tree or bush) often used in cooking.  Depending on where you live, you may simply be able to fine Bay Leaf plant or tree in your local park, or grocery store or plant nursery store.  Below are images of various Bay Leaf plants.

    in Indian stores.

  8. Mint and Mint Oil.

Mint is a plant.  It is easily found in grocery stores and often growing around your home or nearby, depending on your locale's climate, and elevation.  Mint is a natural repellent to cockroaches.  In addition to Mint repelling cockroaches, you can mix a table spoon amount of Mint Oil with water in a spray bottle and use it as a repellent spray.  The effects last for a week or more, and thus require repeat treatments.  Consider drying some Mint and making a rough powder to spread where you don't want insects like cockroaches and ants.  You could also grow Mint around the house.  However, know that Mint plant can spread like a weed, and will need regular maintenance and dirt borders setup for it.  Mint images below.

    sold in grocery stores.

  9. Cucumber Slices.

    Cucumber Slices

Acts as a deterrent or repellent.  You can leave slices strategically.  If trying to protect a room, then you could try rubbing the cucumber on the door entry floor and on the door frame;  all the way around the frame.  it is unknown how long rubbed on cucumber effects last, and I'd appreciate comments indicating experience or knowledge of this.

  10. Garlic.

Acts as a deterrent or repellent.  Set around areas cockroaches have been seen and can be rubbed on surfaces.

  11. Baking Soda or Baking Soda With Sugar Powder.

    1. Spread Light Powder Of Baking Soda On All Surfaces.

      Baking Soda

Baking soda can be gently blown across room surfaces (carpet, concrete, wood floors, etc.) to attach to cockroaches feet.  A hair/blow dryer can be used to spread.  Roaches later groom themselves and consume some of the baking soda.  The soda mixes with their stomach acid or water they consume and generate lots of gas and bursts their internal organs and that kills them.  I rather not think about it.  This method is great for an empty place, or if you are able to not use a kitchen, tables, etc. for a week or so.  After a week, when you return, you should see results.

    2. Sugar and Baking Soda Bait.

      Baking Soda + Sugar

A mix of Sugar and Baking Soda lures the roaches to eat the sugar and consume the baking soda along with it, and later the baking soda mixes with either water or their stomach fluids (such as stomach acid), and generates gas.  The gas builds up and their internal organs burst and kills them from inside.  I rather not think about it.  Can take a few days to a week or more.  Faster impact if you leave a container of water near where the mix of baking soda and sugar are.  Leaving the roaches a source of water next to the Baking Soda and Sugar mix speeds up the elimination process.

      1. Mix 2/3 of Baking Soda with 1/3 of Sugar Powder or Fine (small) Grained Sugar (even half and half will work), and set in a small container that can be reached by a roach from the surface you set it on.
      2. Place a separate container of water next to the container of Baking Soda and Sugar mix.  Make sure both containers are accessible by a cockroach.

  12. Pandanus (Pandan/Screwpine) leaves.

Leaves of Pandanus (aka Pandan, or Screwpine)

Cockroach repellent.  I have found out that taxi drivers in some countries often use this in their vehicles to keep away cockroaches.

Feel free to mix multiple repellent ingredients to create a super spray or super oil.
